the youtube true crime channels we should all get behind

YouTube has come a long way since its inception in 2005 by three average americano's who really wanted to see Janet Jackson's boob exposed during her 2004 super bowl performance on a loop. Now with over 2 billion monthly users and an eclectic array of content being shared every day, we're watching the past, present and future of our world through a 16:9 talking rectangle.

One of the ways I have always enjoyed learning is through multimedia platforms like YouTube and once I was done with  highschool and the need to watch every boring analysis on the themes of pride and prejudice, naturally I turned to learning about true crime. The psychology behind killers, the stories from the victims families themselves and understanding the harsh realities of the justice systems all over the world, you are given the complete information package on a case from any in-depth true crime channel video. The true crime community has grown exponentially and if psychologists like Dr Meg Arroll summarising our obsession into "wanting to understand the dark side of our nature from a safe distance" is anything to go by, the rise has only just begun.

True crime YouTube channels have to be some of the most informative and popular pieces of media during our current climate and there is no limit to how many true crime channels you can find with a simple search. Diving into some channels that must be watched to get your daily dose of true crime, I cannot talk highly enough about this list of badass women giving cold cases, unsolved mysteries and serial killer stories their true and authentic perspective.

Kendall Rae

Hands down the queen of the YouTube true crime community, Kendall Rae leads the way in bringing lesser known crime cases the attention they deserve. With her "Where is?" series creating such positive engagement with viewers and cementing her as a top tier content creator, Kendall has used her increasing platform to make a big difference. Welcoming family members of victims on her channel to raise awareness about their cases has seen the likes of Sarah Turney successfully advocating for her elder sister Alissa to receive justice, with their father Michael Turney officially charged with second-degree murder from the results of this advocacy opportunity.

Kendall is also a proud supporter of THORN, a socially progressive technology company raising the issue of child trafficking and the abuse and exploitation of children through the internet. Kendall's initiative has been to collaborate with brands to create THORN inspired products and selling her own merch with portions of the sale going straight to THORN who then build powerful products, lead new programs, maintain essential resources, and develop awareness campaigns to attack this issue from all sides.

When she's not leading the way in true crime video content, her uploads can vary from covering topics such as free thinking, politics, world travel, space and ocean exploration, history, astrology, strange incidents/phenomena, and paranormal activities which she also covers on both her podcasts Mile Higher and The Sesh.

Stephanie Harlowe

Creating an online community for people who are drawn to the darker side of things, who aren't afraid to hear honest opinions about difficult matters and need some 'coffee & crime' time, Stephanie's channel has got you covered. She's going down a deep rabbit hole of theories, evidence and the dumbest decisions made by law enforcement through series of videos about the most infamous crimes of our time. With some of her most popular uploads diving into the cases of Chris Watts, Casey Anthony and the disappearance of Madeline McCann, you'll never leave her channel without knowing a little bit more than you did before.

Eleanor Neale

The most recognisable Yorkshire accent on YouTube, this English lass started out as a 'get ready with me' vlogger and make-up enthusiast inspired by James Charles videos to dedicating her channel to true crime content. From simple retellings of true crime stories to using her love for research and childhood CSI viewing to good use, Eleanor's content is connecting to viewers around the globe.

Her reach was cemented in 2019 by the positive response she received covering the case of Jessie Boldgett and recognising the work of her parents non-for-profit organisation The LOVE > Hate Project, with a vision of ending male on female violence and inspiring love over hate. Eleanor's work covering Jessie's case and many others that have ended in such tragic circumstances has brought about global change and appreciation to the efforts of getting justice for victims.

Samantha Melanie

When she's not keeping your flight from Perth Airport to your next destination nice and cosy as a cabin crew member, Samantha Melanie Webb is putting Australian true crime stories on the global map. Never shying away from the gritty history of Australia's worst kept criminals from the likes of the infamous Clairemont Serial Killer and Ivan Milat to the heartbreaking stories of Jill Meagher and Luke Batty, Sam will take you (and her gorgeous cat) through the dark side of downunder.

Bella Fiori

Coining "Mystery Monday" the official start of our working week, Brisbane based YouTuber Isabella (Bella) Fiori combines pastel colours, chic wardrobe choices and her insane collection of earrings to give true crime content a brighter touch.

Much love xx
